if you want something lighter (and less oily) than the DIY Eco Styler custard, just turn your fave Eco Styler Gel into a moisturizing hair cream or twist butter.

  1. Place 2 TBSP raw, unrefined shea butter in a double boiler.
    • I like ivory shea butter best but, if you like, you can also use yellow shea butter. They both come from the nut of the Karite tree. However, yellow shea butter has Borututu tree roots (a medicinal plant) added during the milling process to give it a golden color and to make it slightly more firm.
    • NOTE: If your shea butter is pure white in color, it is refined. As someone who is 67% West African, in my family, buying refined shea butter is a cardinal sin! It’s just not done. Besides, the refinement process (i.e., bleaching, deodorizing, etc.) can leave harmful toxins in the final product. It also tends to remove most of the beneficial properties of shea butter, which pretty much defeats the purpose of buying shea butter in the first place.
  2. Add 2 TBSP castor oil.
  3. Add 10 TBSP Eco Styler Argan Oil Gel (⅝ cup).
  4. Add 3 TBSP of rose water.
    • Whip with an electric hand mixer on medium speed.
    • I remove one beater (i.e., only use one beater) for this whole process to avoid overcrowding the bowl or having to use a vessel 10x larger than necessary.
  5. Add ½ tsp vitamin e oil.
    • Vitamin E is an antioxidant that reduces scalp inflammation and helps to repair damage to hair follicles.
    • It also acts as an added preservative. I like the Sundown Naturals brand.
  6. OPTIONAL (but highly recommended): Add essential oils for fragrance and to act as a preservative.
    • 10 drops rose geranium: prevents dull, limp hair and strengthens hair follicles.
    • 10 drops bergamot: promotes hair growth and prevents scalp buildup.
  7. Mix one final time to incorporate all ingredients.
  8. Transfer to an 8 oz. container.
    • Product will continue to thicken as it comes to room temp. If you would like it to thicken more swiftly, place the finished product in the fridge for an hour and then remove.
    • NOTE: This DOES NOT have to be stored in the fridge! But, letting it chill in the fridge for an hour will thicken the cream at a faster rate.

  1. Prepare a double boiler (i.e., as if you were tempering chocolate). 

    • If you do not have a double boiler, you can create a makeshift one by placing a Pyrex glass bowl or stainless steel bowl over a pot filled ¼ to ½ of the way with water.
    • Bring the water to a boil, then reduce to a simmer before adding ingredients.
    • For all my fellow foodies out there, you already know that this method, much like the protective cooking it provides when preparing something with delicate ingredients (e.g., whisking up an egg-based sabayon), will help to prevent the recipe components from the dangers of direct heat. This, in turn, preserves the integrity of our ingredients. 
  2. Add 2 TBSP of  sweet almond oil.
    • Used since biblical times, almond oil is easily absorbed by the skin and helps to alleviate dryness.
    • It also combats future acne, due to its high vitamin A content.
  3. Add 1 TBSP of apricot oil.
    • Apricot oil softens hair and helps to soothe irritated skin.
  4. Add 1 TBSP of organic beeswax.
    • Beeswax has anti-allergenic and anti-inflammatory properties. It helps to trap moisture into the skin and hair and also promotes healthy hair growth.
    • I like to use the pastilles for easier (and faster) melting.
    • You can purchase yellow or white organic beeswax pastilles, depending on your preference. I like the white pastilles because it doesn’t overly saturate my product with color, but either are fine. The yellow beeswax is in its raw, unadulterated (aka unbleached) form. The white pastilles are filtered and lightened. Just make sure they are chemical-free (collected from unsprayed and unfertilized fields) and are bleached naturally (i.e., via air and/or sunlight).
  5. Add 1 TBSP of pure castor oil.
    • Due to its antibacterial and antifungal properties, castor oil helps to treat acne, rashes, and other skin conditions.Just make sure it is hexane-free and cold-pressed.
    • This oil is high in vitamin E, minerals, proteins, and Omega 6 and 9 fatty acids.
    • Its unusually high ricinoleic acid ratio makes castor oil the supreme oil of choice for expedited hair growth.
  6. Add ½ teaspoon of vitamin e oil.
    • Vitamin E oil has anti-aging properties that prevent the damaging effects from the environment (e.g., free radicals).
    • This nutrient-rich oil heals and repairs skin and hair.
    • Vitamin E also acts as a natural preservative to extend the shelf life of the balm.
    • I prefer to buy Sundown Naturals’ vitamin E oil.

  7. Add 15–20 drops of essential oil.
    • I used 10 drops of cedarwood essential oil for its ability to remove toxins and reduce hair loss.
    • I also used 10 drops of eucalyptus essential oil for its antiseptic and aromatic properties as well as its ability to ward off itchy skin while increasing follicle stimulation.
    • However, you can use any essential oil you prefer (i.e., rosemary, peppermint, etc).
  8. Transfer the liquid into a container of your choice, and enjoy!
    • I purchased 100 ml tins (for gifting purposes) and added a custom label that I designed, but you could use any container you like that has been cleaned and sterilized.

         

          NOTE This makes a great Movember gift for that special guy in your life. Or, you can gift this for Christmas (or any other special occasion)!   😉

Super-moisturizing Lavender Hair Spritz

Recipe Card - SUPER-MOISTURIZING SPRITZ

 

  1. Add ½ cup of aloe vera juice.
    • Aloe vera juice relieves itchy, dry scalps and acts as a conditioning agent that reduces frizz.
    • I buy the Fruit of the Earth Aloe Vera Juice. It comes in a large 1 gallon jug and has a shelf life of 1 ½ – 2 years (when stored properly in the fridge).
  2. Add ½ cup of rose water.
    • Rosewater helps to balance the pH of skin.
    • It has anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce and prevent irritated skin and clogged pores.
    • It’s antioxidant properties strengthens and regenerates skin cells.
    • Rose water also hydrates and refreshes hair, and helps with the retention of moisture.
    • I love the rose water by Heritage Store.
  3. Add ½ cup of distilled (not tap) water.
    • If you live in a hard water area like I do, this is a CRUCIAL step.
    • It is imperative that you use distilled (or filtered) water. Don’t use tap water, especially if you are unsure of the water content (or if you have never tested your water)!
  4. Add ⅓ cup of vegetable glycerin.
    • Glycerin is a natural humectant. It helps to attract and retain moisture to your hair’s follicles.
    • I adore the 100% pure version from NOW Solutions. It never fails to soften and moisturize my parched tresses!
  5. Add ½ teaspoon of vitamin e oil.
    • Vitamin e oil has anti-aging properties that prevent damaging effects from the environment (e.g., free radicals).
    • This nutrient-rich oil heals and repairs skin and hair.
    • It also acts as a natural preservative to keep the spritz fresh by extending the shelf life.
    • After trying several brands, I’ve locked onto Sundown Naturals vitamin e oil.
  6. Add 2030 drops of lavender essential oil.
  7. Shake vigorously to incorporate all ingredients, and enjoy!

After tinkering with the proportions for two months, this has become my go-to daily hair moisturizer. I use it on my twist-outs, wash ‘n gos, protective styles, everything! When nothing else will moisturize my hair, this will. Trust!

Follow-up with your fave oil. I normally gravitate to whipped shea butter but, this summer, I’ve been reaching for extra virgin olive oil more frequently. Just use what your hair loves.

DIY Vitamin C Serum

Vitamin C is touted as a must for those who want to prevent premature aging. It is said to increase the collagen production of the skin, which helps fight wrinkles. Here are some of its other benefits:

  • brightens and tightens the skin
  • acts as an antioxidant and helps skin to repair itself (Spots be gone!)
  • restores and regenerates skin cells by attacking free radicals (i.e., reduces the effects of negative sun exposure)

However, most Vitamin C serums cost an arm and a leg, and sometimes the life of your first born! They also often include many unnatural ingredients and preservatives. Since I have sun allergies, I am prone to sun spots and hyperpigmentation. So, I thought that I would make my own Vitamin C serum …

Recipe Card - VITAMIN C SERUMVitamin C Serum

  1. Measure 1 tsp of Vitamin C into a small bowl.
    • You can use vitamin C in powder (L. ascorbic acid) or crystal form (sodium ascorbate).
    • You can also use Camu powder, which is my preference. It is much more expensive, but it is an all-natural alternative with 60x more vitamin C than an orange!
  2. Add 3 tsp of distilled water.
  3. Add 1 ½ tsp of pure vegetable glycerin and stir until well-combined. 
  4. Add ½ tsp of Vitamin E oil and mix again.

    • This acts as a natural preservative, and is also great for the skin!
  5. Transfer the liquid (with a mini funnel) to any dark container of your choice. 
  6. Shake before each use!

Application

So, you’ve made your own Vitamin C serum. Now what? Proper application increases the effectiveness of the serum. Here’s what you should do:

  • Lightly dampen your face with water and start by applying the serum to your face and neck.
  • Let it dry for some time and then apply a moisturizer. Try to use one with a sunscreen in it. It is important that you use the serum before moisturizing. Otherwise, your skin WILL NOT be able to absorb the Vitamin C serum.

Shelf Life

  • While glycerin and Vitamin E oil soften and protect the skin, they also extend the shelf life of the serum from 2 – 3 weeks to 4 – 6 weeks. Want it to last even longer? Keep it in the fridge!
  • Although storage in a refrigerator is completely unnecessary, be sure to make each recipe in small batches (and keep it in a dark container out of direct sunlight) to prevent it from oxidizing too quickly.
  • Each batch should last about two weeks (if used daily). I usually double the recipe so that each batch will last me about a month. 😉

Potency

This recipe is a 20% Vitamin C solution. It is VERY STRONG. If you have sensitive skin, or you have never used a Vitamin C serum before, cut the amount of L. ascorbic acid in half (from 1 tsp to ½ tsp) for a 10% solution. Still too potent? Reduce the amount of L. ascorbic acid to only ¼ tsp (a 5% solution). Then, after a week or two, you can increase the potency level until your skin fully adjusts.

  • DO NOT create more than a 20% solution.
  • According to research, maximum absorption occurs at 20%. Higher concentrations actually have a lower absorption level.

Cayenne Pepper Oil Treatment: FAIL!

I have been reading dozens of posts over the last several months about oil infused with cayenne pepper being used to grow hair. Of course, I was immediately intrigued. LOL! I did some research and there seemed to be mixed reviews. Proponents of the oil exclaimed that it helped to propel their hair growth and, in some cases, even grew hair where it once was bald.  Others claimed that it made their scalps burn, their hair shed excessively, and caused extensive breakage.

There also seems to be some confusion over the proper application. There are two opposing viewpoints: (1) apply the cayenne-infused oil to the scalp, massage the scalp for 1-2 minutes, leave the oil in for 2-3 hours, and co-wash it out, or (2) apply the oil to the scalp, massage the scalp for 1-2 minutes, and leave the oil in, without rinsing out until your normal wash day.

The negative testimonials really scared me. However, I couldn’t find many who had used the cayenne-infused oil  that had posted before and after pics. So, naturally, I was still curious! Well, curious AND cautious. In fact, it took me a month to garner the courage necessary to even take the oil out of the shoe box in my closet … and probably another 2 weeks to decide to use it!

I know what you’re thinking … that I’m a glutton for punishment. But, hey! Someone’s gotta test out these crazy hair growth methods! And, I just had to know if it would work for me. Here’s how I made my cayenne-infused oil …

Recipe Card - CAYENNE PEPPER OIL

  1. Add 4 tsp of cayenne pepper to any container with a lid. 
    • You can use a funnel to avoid wasting any cayenne or making a mess.
  2. Add 4 oz. (½ cup) of any oil(s) of your choice.
  3. Add ½ tsp. vitamin e oil (to act as a natural preservative).
  4. Seal container and keep in a cool, dark area that won’t be exposed to light.
    • I kept my oil container in a shoebox in my closet.
  5. TIPS:
    • Shake the mix each day. (I shook mine 25 times over the course of 30 days.)
    • Let mixture cure for 2-4 weeks. (I let my mix cure for 30 days.)
    • When ready to use, strain the mixture into an applicator bottle.
    • Shake the applicator bottle prior to each use.
    • Apply sparingly but directly to the scalp every night and massage for 1-2 minutes.
    • Avoid contact with your eyes (unless you enjoy pain)!
    • Do a “patch test” prior to use to make sure that you ARE NOT allergic and can handle the potency level. For some, cayenne pepper can cause skin irritation. So, if you have sensitive skin, DO NOT use any oil infused with cayenne pepper.

THE PROCESS

To my surprise, the cayenne pepper oil DID NOT burn or irritate my scalp AT ALL. The first few days, I felt a very slight tingle that was barely noticeable. After that, I pretty much felt absolutely nothing.

I used the cayenne pepper oil for two weeks straight while using the GHE five nights a week. I left the oil in my hair each night until my weekly wash. My scalp and hair never felt oily. If anything, it felt like the cayenne pepper oil dried out my hair a bit. Week three, I didn’t use the oil or the GHE at all because I had family coming into town for a week, and I was worried that applying cayenne pepper oil every day and using the GHE would ruin my hairstyle (i.e., prevent it from lasting 7 days). Week 4, I used the cayenne pepper oil while doing the inversion method.

THE SKINNY

As you can see, I only received about a 1/2″ of total growth over the course of a month, and that’s with me doing the inversion method. I gained pretty spotty growth from the inversion method while using the cayenne pepper oil (my worst to date while using this method)! While I am grateful the cayenne-infused oil didn’t burn or irritate my scalp, or cause extensive breakage, it didn’t exactly encourage any hair growth either. In fact, I think it stunted (or at least stalled) my hair growth during the month. My hair in the front is about 1/4″ shorter than last month (from 9.25″ to barely 9.0″). So, I had some minor breakage there. However, I maintained my length on the side of my hair that I gained in the first three weeks of the month (at 9.25″). And, I gained a 1/2″ in the back of my hair from last month (from 8.5″ to 9.0″). 

Not sure if the cayenne pepper oil caused the stunted growth and minor breakage, or if the inversion method simply exacerbated the problem, or if it’s all of the above, but I’m convinced that the GHE saved my hair from breaking off excessively and becoming damaged. So, no more cayenne pepper oil for me!  Truth be told, I’m feeling a little silly for tripling the recipe and making 12 ounces of oil.  Sigh … But, I’m not one to be wasteful. So, I plan to add a teaspoon or two of cayenne pepper oil to my weekly cholesterol treatment when I deep condition my hair to help me use up my remaining oil. Waste not, want not!

Turn Your Rinse-out Conditioner into a Leave-in

Recipe Card - Leave-in Conditioner

  1. In an empty bottle, add 3 oz. (6 tablespoons) of your favorite moisturizing conditioner. 
    • I used VO5 Moisture Milksan affordable cheapie conditioner that is highly moisturizing.
    • I placed the conditioner in a spray bottle with ounce line measurements that I got at Walmart for only 92 cents in the lawn and garden section! This spray bottle provides easy measuring and even easier application.
  2. Add 9 oz. of warm distilled water (1⅛ cups).
    • Leave-in conditioners are generally diluted conditioners. Please make sure you add at least 3 times more water than conditioner. Otherwise, the leave-in will weigh down your hair.
    • Try to use distilled/bottled water because the minerals in tap water can build up in your hair, making it hard to manage.
  3. Add 1 teaspoon of glycerin (a natural humectant) to make an extra moisturizing leave-in.
  4. Add 1 teaspoon of vitamin e oil (to act as a natural preservative). 
  5. OPTIONAL:
    • You can add 1 or 2 teaspoons of castor, olive, or coconut oil for extra nourishment, or to make this mixture double as a daily moisturizer.
    • You can add two teaspoons of MSM powder (about nine 1500mg tablets) or two teaspoons (about six 500mg tablets) of Vitamin C for an extra strengthening hair formula. Just be sure to dissolve the MSM and Vitamin C powder in three to four tablespoons of warm water. The mixture must dissolve fully before it can be incorporated into the rest of the leave-in.
    • You can add 10-15 drops of an essential oil for further hair benefits (i.e., peppermint, tea tree, or rosemary) or for a scent boost.
  6. Shake before each use, and enjoy your new leave-in!

NOTE: This is a general formula. You can play around with the concentration to determine what will best suit your needs, but always remember to listen to your hair.
