The SheaMoisture Jamaican Black Castor Oil (JBCO) Strengthen & Grow Shampoo has a very pleasant earthy scent almost akin to a mild licorice. This JBCO Strengthen & Grow Shampoo has medium viscosity … neither thin nor thick, yet closer to the thicker side. I like this because it makes it easier to open and close the bottle without worrying about wasting product unnecessarily while in the shower like some other runny or watery hair cleansers. Because this is a sulfate-free shampoo, it has ZERO lather. So, if that bothers you, look elsewhere! I’m not a huge fan of super sudsy shampoos, so I don’t particularly mind as long as my hair and scalp feel clean afterward.

I shampooed my hair twice just to make sure it was completely free of any and all debris (due to the lack of lather), and my hair felt smooth and super clean (without being stripped)! I love the fact that the shampoo is loaded with JBCO (to promote healthy hair growth), has peppermint (to stimulate the scalp), and contains apple cider vinegar (to clarify and regulate the scalp’s pH). I examined my scalp after use, and I had NO product build up whatsoever (unlike when I used the SheaMoisture Fruit Fusion Coconut Water Weightless Shampoo and Crème Rinse).

The SheaMoisture Jamaican Black Castor Oil (JBCO) Strengthen, Grow & Restore Conditioner has a different but equally pleasant scent with subtle floral undertones. This JBCO Conditioner is super thick and comes in a bottle with a pump dispenser. I love this feature because it makes application a breeze, especially while in the shower. In fact, I wish the shampoo bottle also had a pump top!

I applied the conditioner to my hair and gently finger detangled. I left the conditioner in my hair while I completed the rest of my shower routine. The conditioner, while thick in consistency, didn’t weigh down my hair. When I rinsed it out, my hair felt soft and my curls were well defined. Like the shampoo, this conditioner also contains JBCO loaded with reparative omegas and peppermint to increase circulation to the scalp. In addition, it includes shea butter for deep moisturizing and conditioning.

When I finished washing and conditioning my hair, my tresses looked great. My hair was shiny, and my curls were defined and slightly elongated. However, my strands became quite parched as it air dried. Since the only products I had used in my hair was the JBCO Strengthen & Grow Shampoo and the JBCO Strengthen, Grow & Restore Conditioner, I can only attribute the dryness to that. Overall, I really love the shampoo and conditioner and how my tresses felt (in the shower), but I did not like how my hair started to feel once it began to dry. My hair stayed parched for a full 24 hours after use, even after I had thoroughly moisturized my hair. On day 2, I liberally applied some of my tried and true S-curl No-drip Moisturizer. That seemed to do the trick of getting and maintaining the moisture levels of my hair.

PROS

  • Made with natural, certified organic, and ethically sourced ingredients
  • Designed for a myriad of consumers: persons with natural, chemically processed, or heat styled hair
  • Nourishes and strengthens damaged, brittle hair, reducing the appearance of breakage and shedding
  • Promotes healthy hair growth
  • Leaves hair shiny
  • Restores moisture without weighing hair down
  • Shampoo easily clarifies scalp and removes product buildup
  • Conditioner is lightweight and easily detangles
  • Both the shampoo and conditioner are sulfate-free, color safe, and cruelty-free; they also DO NOT contain any phthalates, propylene glycol, mineral oil, or petroleum

CONS

  • Not gentle enough for frequent use (if you have low porosity hair)
  • Left my hair feeling dry after only 1 use

If you have higher porosity hair, you will not likely experience the same “dry hair” effect that I did. If you have low porosity hair (like I do), I would recommend using this as a clarifying shampoo and conditioner and restrict use to 1-2x a month (max). For instance, if you wash weekly, use this shampoo and conditioner, then use another brand for the remaining 3 weeks in the month (or rotate every other week if your hair can handle bi-weekly use). That way you can avoid overly drying out your mane.

Because this line has been formulated to nourish and strengthen damaged hair while reducing hair shedding and breakage, I think it may be a worthwhile addition to your hair product rotation. Just make sure NOT to overuse it!
